What’s the weirdest movie you’ve ever watched?
The weirdest movie I’ve ever watched? That question causes me to think of a lot of movies I have seen over the years. Is the weirdest movie a bad movie, or just something that goes off the tracks but is still enjoyable?
One definition of weirdest is the highest degree of strangeness, unearthliness, or departure from what is normal; by that definition, was Star Wars the weirdest movie when it premiered in 1977? Nothing else like it existed at the time.
For this question, I’m going to reach back to my high school years. I was on the swim team all four years of high school. We were a weird group; you had to be up super early for morning practice in a pool three towns away. Every year, the week before the state championships was exciting; we would still be in the water practicing, but we also had special traditions that week. A pasta dinner at a local Italian restaurant, the shaving of everyone’s head at someone’s house, and the evening of pizza and a movie. It was always the same movie, the dark, twisted story of Apocalypse Now.
Released in 1979 with the Vietnam War as its backdrop, the film is loosely based on Joseph Conrad’s 1899 novel Heart of Darkness. An army captain is given a secret mission to locate and kill a special forces colonel who has gone rogue and crazy. The story is about the collapse of civilization and the loss of empathy. It has been years since I last watched Apocalypse Now, but some of its scenes have stayed with me through the years.
