Trees & Rocks

On a recent hike on Blueberry Mountain in the White Mountain National Forest, we came across these two trees, possibly Northern Red Oaks, growing from an outcropping of rock covered with lichens and moss.

This caught my attention, for, as you can see, a quick look raises the question: where does the rock end and the tree begin?
