Tuckahoe Preserve

After a day of big crowds, I needed a walk in the woods.  I found that walk at the Tuckahoe Preserve in Berwick, part of the Great Works Land Trust.  The 130-acre preserve features approximately 6,200 linear feet of frontage along the Salmon Falls River, protecting the dynamic riparian habitat for wildlife.

A short walk from the parking lot brought me to an unexpected sight, an athletic field.  Later, I would learn this area was the site of a turf farm.

The trail is off to the left as you walk across the field.  After starting as a single-track path, the trail widens.  The journey through this mixed forest takes you to the Salmon Falls River, before looping around.

At one spot along the river, there are several trees showing evidence of beavers’ work to bring those trees down.

The trail is a nice 1.5-mile out-and-back route.  Other than the house near the parking lot, only the sounds of the civilized world can be heard once deep on the trail, a good place to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life.
