On a hike of Champlain Mountain this summer, I noticed the rocks of the cairn make the perfect frame for an Island chain known as The Porcupines in Frenchman’s Bay, along the coast of Maine. There is Sheep Porcupine, Burnt Porcupine, Long Porcupine, and Bald Porcupine.
The cairn is one of many along the Champlain North Ridge Trail on Champlain Mountain in Acadia National Park.
For those asking what a cairn is. A cairn is a human-created pile of rocks used on a hiking trail to mark the path, indicate a turn, or signal the summit. Cairns are an essential safety measure, especially above treeline.
