We were making our way up the Wild River in the White Mountain National Forest. A mixture of hiking and waiting through the water on a beautiful summer day led us to this rock.
As we made our way along the river, we came across many rocks, boulders, both big and small. This one stood out to us. Now, I’m no expert on geology, but a little online research leads me in the direction that this is a xenolith feature.
This older, foreign rock has been incorporated into a larger, younger igneous rock body during its formation from cooling magma or lava. I could be wrong. Either way, a cool rock to come across and another reason to get outside to explore.
